The Orchard House

We toured The Orchard House – where Louisa May Alcott wrote her classic work, Little Women. We learned so much about the Alcott family and how Louisa’s family inspired her to write Little Women.

Something really neat that I learned:

Louisa’s youngest sister, May (Amy in Little Women), was able to study art in London, Paris and Rome. While in Concord, she thought a young kid how to sculpt. The kid was “sculpting” things by using potatoes and his parents wanted him to learn the right way so May became his art teacher. The boy made a bust of Mr. Bronson Alcott and it is now sitting in the study of the Orchard House. That kid’s name was Daniel Chester French, he later made the Minute Man statue and then he made the Lincoln Memorial!!! It is said that he practiced for the Lincoln Memorial using the tools that May Alcott have him! Pretty cool!!!
